SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs defeated the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 4-2 in front of 4,114 fans at Harbour Station in Wednesday’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.
The birthday boys got it done for Saint John. Matthew Highmore scored twice and assisted on another and Connor Donaghey had a goal and two assists for Saint John in their birthday performances. Marcus Cuomo tallied two assists and Stephen Anderson had a single for the Sea Dogs. Sebastien Auger registered his 21st win of the season, stopping 39 of 41 shots as the Sea Dogs climbed to 22-37-1-0 on the year.
Clark Bishop and Stephen Woodworth replied for the Screaming Eagles and Alex Bureau made 30 of 34 saves in the loss. Cape Breton fell to 12-41-3-5.
Cape Breton came out quickly after their 12-2 smashing at the hands of the Moncton Wildcats. Bishop scored the games opening goal at 4:22.
The two birthday boys combined for a goal to get the Sea Dogs on the board. Highmore scored his third of the year with a quick, low shot that beat Bureau at 5:11. Connor Donaghey, the other birthday kid on the Sea Dogs roster, made a great pass to Highmore from beside the net for the first assist. Marcus Cuomo nabbed the second assist on the play.
Shots in the first favoured the Sea Dogs overwhelmingly, 16-5.
The second saw a lot of action in the Sea Dogs zone as Cape Breton outshot the Sea Dogs 23-6 in the second. One shot beat Auger to make it 2-1 with Woodworth’s sixth of the year at 5:43.
The birthday line connected again for the Sea Dogs early in the third. Donaghey made it 2-2 with his third of the year after Highmore drove to the net and put a shot on Bureau. The Newfie tied it up, tucking it just over the line at 2:43 of the final frame. Cuomo also assisted for his second point of the evening.
Saint John continued to roll in the third, and the b-day line struck again at 11:32 as Highmore scored his fourth of the year and second of the game with Donaghey grabbing his second assist of the contest.
Anderson’s goal at 11:45 put the Sea Dogs ahead by two, making the score 4-2 and ending the scoring.
Maxime Villemaire and Raphael Corriveau started to mix it up, but Villemaire dropped the Eagles winger with a single punch. The two were handed delay of game penalties as opposed to fighting majors for the quick bout.
Next up, the Sea Dogs take on the Victoriaville Tigres Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. right here at Harbour Station. It’s Country Night and fans are encouraged to dress up in their best Country fashions. There is also a chance for fans to win tickets to see Taylor Swift live in concert.
