BURT SUPERB AS SEA DOGS SNAP STREAK IN OT THRILLER

The Saint John Sea Dogs completed the late comeback and defeated the Val-d’Or Foreurs in thrilling fashion 4-3 on Friday night at Harbour Station. Robbie Burt was superb notching not only the teddy bear toss goal, but also a hat trick and the OT winner.

The Sea Dogs opened the game with several chances, players were eager to give their team the lead but also to score the infamous ‘teddy bear goal’.  Val-d’Or played spoiler early getting on the board at 8:35 on a goal from Nicolas Ouellet. Saint John battled hard out shooting the Foreurs 14-13 in the frame.

Val-d’Or seemed to have the edge in momentum to start the second after killing off an early tripping penalty to Karl Boudrias. The Foreurs took a 2-0 lead at 6:52 when Jacob Gaucher batted in a rebound. Under two minutes later Robbie Burt started what would be a memorable game for him scoring his first of the night on the power play when he ripped a blast from the circle to bring the Dogs within one and to bring the teddy bears raining down on the ice. After a small delay as the bears were retrieved from the ice action resumed. Val-d’Or then picked up a power play goal of their own from Jeremy Michel at 17:39 to make it 3-1 Foreurs as the second period ended. Shots in the frame favored Val-d’Or 11-9.

The third period was all Sea Dogs as they were hungry for the comeback. At 10:26 Charlie DesRoches picked up his fifth of the season and second in as many games to cut the lead to one. Less than a minute later Robbie Burt hit home his ninth of the season and second of the game to tie it at 3-3 with under nine minutes to go. The momentum seemed to tip in favor of the Sea Dogs but Jonathan Lemieux kept the Foreurs alive making some timely saves down the stretch as Saint John peppered him with 21 shots in the period. Not to be out done Alex D’Orio came up big when it mattered to send the game to overtime. Shots on goal in the third were 21-13 Saint John.

At 2:24 of overtime Robbie Burt came streaking down the left side and slipped by the defender enough to rip a no-doubter bar in past Lemieux to secure the hat trick, and the Sea Dogs win.

Burt finished with three goals on the night. Rookie William Villeneuve added two assists.
