SAINT JOHN – Alex D’Orio made 34 stops and Ostap Safin netted his first QMJHL goal as the Saint John Sea Dogs defeated the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, 3-1, Wednesday at Harbour Station.
Alexis Girard and Cole Reginato also scored for Saint John (2-3-1-0). Tyler Smith and Daniel Hardie each recorded two assists in the team’s second straight win.
Adam Holwell replied for Acadie-Bathurst (2-2-1-1), which lost its third straight.
A scoring summary is available HERE.
Safin got the Sea Dogs on the board nearly two minutes into the first period.
Smith blocked a shot in the high slot of the Saint John zone and saw William Poirier streaking to the neutral zone. Poirier handed off the puck to Safin, who carried it down the right side and rifled a wrist shot past the blocker of Dominik Tmej in the Titan goal.
The home team doubled its lead with nine minutes left in the period when Girard took a pass on the left wing and whistled a wrister beyond Tmej’s glove hand.
Reginato made it a 3-0 game about four minutes later.
Daniel Hardie took a pass on the right side of the low slot, and then fed Reginato in front of the crease. The overage winger redirected it past a helpless Tmej.
Reilly Pickard replaced Tmej to start the second period.
Acadie-Bathurst got the only goal of the middle frame near the eight-minute mark when Holwell intercepted a pass up the middle and sent a wrist shot under the glove of Alex D’Orio.
D’Orio made sure it stayed a two-goal game early in the third period when Titan forward Liam Murphy broke in from the Saint John blueline and forced the netminder to make back-to-back, point-blank saves.
The Sherbrooke-native also stoned Felix Meunier on a chance from in close.
Pickard went to the bench for an extra skater with under two minutes left, but Acadie-Bathurst could not cut into their deficit.
D’Orio’s 34-save performance made him first star. Safin’s goal prompted a second-star selection. Smith earned third star with his two assists in front of 3,197 fans in attendance.
