SAINT JOHN – Goaltender Alex D’Orio has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Penguins confirmed the news on their website.
D’Orio, 18, was invited to Pittsburgh’s rookie training camp as an undrafted free agent. He helped the Penguins earn the best record at the 2017 Prospects Challenge in Buffalo last week, going 2-0-1 in three appearances while stopping 74 of 82 shots. He also participated in Pittsburgh’s summer development camp in July.
The native of Sherbrooke, Quebec, went 19-2-2 with a 2.40 goals-against average and .903 save percentage in 28 games with the Sea Dogs as a rookie last season as part of the 2017 President Cup championship team. He was selected by Saint John in the first round (ninth overall) of the 2015 QMJHL Entry Draft.
D’Orio will now attend Pittsburgh’s main camp.
