LAST-SECOND OT GOAL LIFTS SCREAMING EAGLES PAST SEA DOGS
SYDNEY, NS – Egor Sokolov scored with one second left in overtime to give the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles to a 3-2 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs, Wednesday at Centre 200.
The goal spoiled a standout 48-save performance from Sea Dogs’ goalie Alex D’Orio.
Gabriel Proulx and Shaun Miller also scored for Cape Breton (22-21-5-1), which won its second straight game.
Aiden MacIntosh potted his first QMJHL goal for Saint John (12-28-7-2) while Anthony Boucher also found the net in the team’s fourth consecutive loss.
A scoring summary is available HERE.
The Screaming Eagles scored first, before the three-minute mark, when a shot from the left wing created a rebound in the crease for Proulx to chop past D’Orio.
Miller made it a 2-0 game with eight minutes left in the frame, redirecting a shot from the right point past D’Orio’s right leg.
Saint John appeared to have cut its deficit in half with under five minutes remaining in the period when a scramble in the crease saw Cedric Pare knock a loose puck inside the left post. But the goal was waved off immediately because officials ruled a Sea Dog player had pushed a Cape Breton defender into his own goaltender and knocked him down.
MacIntosh did get Saint John on the board four minutes into the second period with his first QMJHL goal.
A battle for a loose puck off of a faceoff saw it eventually bounce to MacIntosh on the inside edge of the left circle. The Moncton-native ripped a quick wrist shot under the glove of Kevin Mandolese in the Cape Breton net for the first goal of his career.
D’Orio made sure it stayed a one-goal game during a Screaming Eagles’ power play later in the frame.
Phelix Martineau, Cape Breton’s captain and leading scorer, took a cross-ice pass in the left circle and whistled a wrist shot toward the goal. D’Orio lunged from his left to his right and caught the puck over his head with his catching glove for one of 21 saves in the second.
Boucher tied the game five minutes into the third period.
Alexis Girard took a pass on the left wing and moved slowly toward the side of the goal, drawing Mandolese out of the crease. The blueliner swung a pass back in front of an empty net where Boucher batted it home.
Sokolov’s game winner came with one second left in overtime when he took a shot from the high slot that went off the left post and into the top of the goal.
Mandolese earned the win and second star with 15 saves. D’Orio was named first star with 48 stops in a losing cause.
Sokolov’s game-winner made him third star in front of 1,926 fans in attendance.
The Sea Dogs’ next game is Friday, February 2nd, at 7 p.m. against the Charlottetown Islanders at Harbour Station. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station Box Office and online.
