The Sea Dogs made it two in a row over the Moncton Wildcats on Sunday with a 3-2 overtime win in St. Stephen. Rookie forward and Fredericton, New Brunswick native Josh Lawrence dazzled fans with a natural hat trick that included the overtime winner.
After a scoreless first period that saw Alex D’Orio return between the pipes for the first time this pre-season, Moncton got on the board late in the second thanks to a Jacob Hudson blast from the blue line.
The Sea Dogs fell into penalty trouble early in the third period but staved off the Moncton pressure to stay within one goal. Lawrence then potted his first of the game on the power play to tie it up at 7:53. Under seven minutes later the Sea Dogs took the lead when Lawrence added his second of the afternoon with assists going to fellow rookies Nicolas Kakouras and Brady Burns. Simon Le Coultre tied it for the Wildcats late with just over three minutes to play.
It only took 48 seconds of overtime for Josh Lawrence to once again find the net and complete his hat trick, securing the victory for the Sea Dogs who improve to 4-0-0-0 in the pre-season. This is the first time since 2010-11 the Sea Dogs have started the pre-season with four straight wins.
Charles-Antoine Lavallee and Alex MacDonald split their time in net for the Wildcats with MacDonald allowing the three Sea Dogs goals. Alex D’Orio played all 60:48 for the Sea Dogs stopping 30 of 32.
