SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs fell 8-3 at the hands of the Halifax Mooseheads in Wednesday’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action. The 3,681 fans at Harbour Station gave returning Sea Dog Stephen MacAulay a standing ovation during a pre-game ceremony honouring the 20-year old.
Maxime Villemaire had a goal and an assist for the Sea Dogs. Matthew Highmore and Jurij Repe added singles for the home side as Sebastien Auger made 16 saves on 22 shots in the first 28:03 of play. Alex Fournier stepped in to finish the game and stopped 16 of 18 in relief. The Sea Dogs dropped to 21-35-1-0.
MacAulay had a goal and an assist in his return. Martin Frk had a hat-trick and added an assist and Jonathan Drouin scored once and helped out on three others as the Mooseheads downed the home team. Also scoring for Halifax were Andrew Ryan, Luca Ciampini and MacKenzie Weegar. Halifax improved to 47-6-2-1 as Chris Clarke stopped 24 of 27 in the win.
The homecoming MacAulay spoiled the party in a hurry. Just 3:03 into the game, Weegar found MacAulay all alone in front. The former Sea Dog deked Auger and slid it past him for the game’s opening goal.
Halifax kept up the attack in the first. Drouin used the extra man to extend the Moosehead’s lead to 2-0 at 12:37.
Ryan forced a turnover in the neutral zone and took the puck in shorthanded to make it 3-0 Halifax at 16:47 of the first period.
Frk followed up just over a minute later at 17:50 with the goal to make it 4-0.
Things kept rolling for Halifax in the second. Frk nabbed his second of the night just 56 seconds into the frame.
Ciampini made it 6-0 Mooseheads on a power play goal at 7:14.
Frk scored his hat-trick goal at 11:57 of the middle frame, signaling the end of Auger’s night.
The Sea Dogs got on the board in the second. Repe fired a blast from the point that ricocheted off a Mooseheads defender in front and found the back of the net at 14:24. It was Saint John’s first power play goal of the nightand Repe’s third goal of the year. Noah Zilbert and Ian Saab nabbed the assists on the play.
Halifax added one more before the end of the period, with Weegar’s eighth goal of the season at 18:21. The score to end the second was 8-1 Mooseheads.
Saint John got one more back as Villemaire tipped David Weckworth’s point shot to make it 8-2 at 2:05 of the third.
Highmore put home the rebound after Villemaire made a great play to force the turnover and toe drag around the sprawled Halifax defenceman. He put the puck on net and Highmore finished for his second of the year at 8:12 of the third.
