PENALTIES A KILLER AS TITAN STING DOGS
SAINT JOHN, NB – The Saint John Sea Dogs experienced some growing pains on Saturday night in a 10-1 loss to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Saint John now sits at 1-3-1-0 while the Titan improve to 2-2-0-0.
Carson Gallant made his presence felt in his debut with the Dogs delivering a booming hit to Liam Leonard as he entered the Sea Dogs zone. Gallant and Liam Murphy then dropped the gloves and both received fighting majors. Acadie-Bathurst opened the scoring two minutes later on a power play blast from Cole Rafuse. This opened the floodgates for the Titan who then saw goals added from Drolet and Ivan, before Rafuse added three more to put the Titan up 6-0 to end the first. Three of those goals came on the power play as Nathan Larose received a five minute major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct at 12:56. Shots on goal in the period were 16-3 in favor of the Titan.
Alex D’Orio came out to start the second period in net for Saint John in relief of Tommy Da Silva. Troubles continued for the Dogs as New York Islanders prospect Noah Dobson scored at 4:32 again on the power play. Brady Burns put Saint John on the board at 6:18, Mason and Campoli added assists. Campoli now has four assists in five games, tying him for the league lead among defencemen. Le Couffe and Malatesta added additional goals before the end of the frame to make it 9-1 Titan after two. Shots in the period were 13-12 in favor of Acadie-Bathurst.
The third period saw a more evenly matched game but it was too little too late for the Sea Dogs. The Titan added another when Felix-Antoine Drolet scored his second of the game at 14:13 to put the Titan up 10-1. D’Orio gave the Harbour Station faithful something to cheer about late as he flashed the glove during a Daniil Vertiy penalty shot at 15:24 of the third. Shots on goal were 12-7 Titan in the frame, and 41-22 overall.
Alex D’Orio stopped 21 of 25 in relief while Mark Grametbauer turned aside 21 of 22 for the Titan win.
