SAINT JOHN – Forward Ostap Safin and defenceman Radim Salda have been named to the selection camp roster for the Czech Republic ahead of the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Safin, 18, leads the Sea Dogs with 29 points in 30 games, and is tied for the team lead in goals with 11. He’s also third in rookie scoring in the QMJHL.
The native of Prague, Czech Republic, represented his homeland last season with four points in five games at the 2017 Under-18 World Junior Championship. He also had four points in five games at the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, where the Czech Republic won a gold medal, and one goal in five games at the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. The Edmonton Oilers’ prospect is in his first year with Saint John.
Salda, 18, leads all QMJHL rookie defencemen with six goals and 22 points in 30 games. The product of Pardubice, Czech Republic, posted one assist in five games at the 2017 Under-18 World Junior Championship. He had one assist in five games for the gold-medalists at the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and played five games at the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
The selection camp begins Tuesday in Niagara Falls, New York.
The 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship runs December 26th through January 5th in Buffalo, New York.
