SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs hosted the Sherbrooke Phoenix at Harbour Station for the first time as the Phoenix took the contest 3-2 in front of 4,396 fans in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Saturday night.
Maxime Villemaire had a goal and an assist and Jakub Izacky scored once for Saint John with Sebastien Auger stopping 18 of 21 in the loss. Ian Saab had two assists as the Sea Dogs dropped to 19-28-0-0.
Carl Neill, Alexis Bernier and Denis Kamaev responded for the Phoenix as Jacob Gervais-Chouinard stopped 32 of 34 in the win as Sherbrooke pulled two points closer to the Sea Dogs and climbed to 14-28-2-4.
The Phoenix scored the first goal of the hockey game as Neill snapped one past Auger at 12:17.
Shortly after the goal, big, Russian defenceman Vladislav Lysenko dropped Marcus Cuomo at the Sea Dogs blue line with a big hit. Stephen Anderson stepped in and dropped the gloves with Lysenko in a short, but spirited bout at 13:49.
At 15:32, with a two-man advantage, Sherbrooke struck again. Bernier beat a sprawled Auger up top.
Shots in the first were 13-4 in favour of Sherbrooke.
Auger made to big stops on the PK just past the halfway point of the period.
Noah Zilbert had a great shorthanded chance, deking the Phoenix defender right out of his skates with a nifty move to cut towards the net with just under five minutes remaining in the second.
Kamaev made it 3-0 at 4:09.
Izacky gave the Sea Dogs some life with a snipe on Gervais-Chouinard, picking the bottom left corner at 9:27.
Jason Cameron laid out the body and made a great block in the final minutes to keep the game within reach.
Villemaire brought the Sea Dogs as close as they would get, making it 3-2 at 14:38. Saab registered his second assist of the game on the play.
