NORTH SYDNEY, NS – The Saint John Sea Dogs closed the preseason with a 7-2 loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles tonight at Emera Centre Northside.
Peyton Hoyt and Drake Batherson each scored twice for Cape Breton while Massimo Carozza, Logan O’Neil and Tyler Hylland netted one goal apiece.
Matt Green and Olivier Mathieu responded for Saint John, which played with a shorthanded lineup as eleven players were away at NHL rookie camps.

Cape Breton seized momentum in the opening period.
Carozza got the home side on the board eight-and-a-half minutes in. Hoyt and O’Neil added markers 24 seconds apart in the final minute of the frame, giving the Screaming Eagles a 3-0 advantage after one period.
Batherson buried a power play goal just 76 seconds into the second, but Green cut the deficit to 4-1 with five minutes remaining in the period.
Two late-second-period goals from Batherson and Hylland made it a 6-1 game.
Mathieu, the team’s 2016 first-round draft pick who rejoined the Sea Dogs after being recalled this week, potted his fourth goal of the preseason two-and-a-half minutes into the third.
Hoyt ended the scoring with a shorthanded goal with six minutes left.
Kevin Mandolese made 19 saves for the win in the Screaming Eagles’ net. Alex Bishop and Alex D’Orio split duties in the Sea Dog goal, combining for 17 saves .
Saint John’s next game is its season opener on Friday, September 23rd, at 7 p.m. against the Charlottetown Islanders at Eastlink Centre.
