VAL-D’OR, Que. – The Saint John Sea Dogs beat the Val-d’Or Foreurs 4-1 for their second straight win in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Saturday.
The Foreurs failed to extend their two-game shutout streak to three games against the Sea Dogs. Zack Phillips scored twice and set up a single for Jason Cameron. Stephen MacAulay had the other goal for Saint John while Mathieu Corbeil made 14 saves for the win as the Sea Dogs improved to 9-5.
Former Sea Dog Nicolas Larocque-Marcoux replied for the Foreurs and Francois Tremblay stopped 24 shots in the loss as Val-d’Or fell to 6-6-0-2.
The Dogs outshot the Foreurs 8-3 in a slow starting first period. Neither team could capitalize on the power play, despite two chances each. Time expired after a flurry of final attacks by the Sea Dogs. Phillips and Gauthier had the best scoring chances in the final two minutes of the first, but Tremblay made a block of huge saves to keep the game tied at zero.
Devon Oliver-Dares had the first chance of the second, but lost the puck and crashed into the post as Tremblay scrambled to keep the puck out. After Corbeil stopped Benjamin Casavant on a 2-on-1 chance, Phillips took advantage of a broken play coming in from centre ice and sniping the top corner at 15:38. The assist on the play was Ian Saab’s first point as a Saint John Sea Dog.
Some great work by Aidan Kelly set up the second Dogs goal, cutting in towards the net where the puck was slapped off his stick and dropped right to Cameron, who slid in his second of the year at 17:49.
Just 55 seconds into the third, Phillips scored his second of the night on a pass from Nathan Beaulieu during a bad Val-d’Or change. Phillips made a beautiful toe drag around the frozen Foreurs defender and roofed the puck for his seventh of the season.
Jonathan Huberdeau managed to find Danick Gauthier all alone at the top of the left circle and wired one off the crossbar just before the 5:00 mark. Phillips had an open net chance for the hat-trick, but was blocked by Gabriel Beaupre with just over five minutes to go in the game.
Marcoux scored the replying goal on the power play for the Foreurs by splitting the Saint John defence at 18:05 of the third. MacAulay fired a buzzer beater past Tremblay at 19:59 on assists from Phillips and Jurco to make it 4-1.
Saint John’s next home game is the Pink in the Rink Night Oct. 22 against the Prince Edward Island Rocket. The Sea Dogs will play in special pink jerseys, which will be auctioned directly off the players’ backs. Proceeds from the jersey auction will go towards breast cancer research.
