SEA DOGS END ROAD TRIP WITH LOSS IN RIMOUSKI

RIMOUSKI – Samuel Dove-McFalls had a hat trick against his former team, including the game-winner, as the Rimouski Oceanic defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs, 8-1, Sunday at Colisee Financiere Sun Life.

Denis Mikhnin contributed three goals and an assist for Rimouski (28-11-4-0) while Mathieu Bizier added a goal and three assists. Alexis Lafreniere chipped in with a goal and three points in his team’s fourth straight win.

Radim Salda had the only goal for Saint John (11-24-6-2), which have lost six in a row.

A scoring summary is available HERE.

The Oceanic opened the scoring nearly twelve minutes into the game after a turnover near the Sea Dogs’ blueline.

Bizier took a pass near the left side of the crease and fed it across to Mikhnin, who chipped it past a sprawling Alex D’Orio in the Saint John goal.

Salda tied the game exactly one minute later.

Former Sea Dog Chase Stewart played the puck from the corner to the left point. Salda stepped into a one-timer and blasted it over the blocking arm of Rimouski goalie Colten Ellis.

Dove-McFalls gave his team the lead again with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the period.

The Montreal-native took a pass in the right corner, near the bottom of the right circle, and sent a shot through a screen that got through D’Orio’s legs to make it 2-1.

Mikhnin struck again with seven minutes left in the second.

Defenceman Charle-Eduoard D’Astous drove down the left side and fired a shot from a sharp angle that was stopped by D’Orio. Mikhnin slid the rebound through the goalie’s legs.

Ellis made sure his team kept a two-goal advantage with a big stop late in the period.

Ben Reid brought the puck toward the net on the left side of the slot and feathered a pass across the crease to Kevin Mason. Mason whipped a quick wrister toward the goal, but was stoned by Ellis’ right leg.

Rimouski extended its lead to three with two minutes left in the period.

Mathieu Nadeau carried the puck down the right wing and drove to the net, slipping a pass across the crease to Lafreniere. The first overall pick in the 2017 QMJHL Entry Draft tapped the puck into an open net.

Matthew Williams replaced D’Orio to start the third period.

Mikhnin completed his hat trick two-and-a-half minutes into the third, as he came out of the right corner and tried to bank it in off Williams. He ended up burying his own rebound.

Three minutes later, Dove-McFalls took a pass in the slot and ripped it past Williams for his second of the game.

Bizier made it 7-1 with six minutes left, taking a feed at the left side of the crease and chipping it home.

Dove-McFalls wrapped up the scoring with 13.1 seconds remaining, handling a pass in the right circle and rifling a wrist shot past Williams’ glove for his third of the game.

Ellis made 22 stops for the win. D’Orio had 21 saves through forty minutes in a losing cause. Williams stopped 11 shots in the third period.

Mikhnin was named first star with four points while Dove-McFalls’ hat trick made him second star. Stewart snared third star with a +3 rating and four hits in front of 3,175 fans in attendance.
