The Mooseheads opened the scoring more than three minutes into the game after a turnover in the Sea Dogs’ zone.
Connor Moynihan drove to the net from the left wing and had his shot stopped by Alex D’Orio, but Crossley deposited the rebound past the helpless netminder.
Wilson responded 19 seconds later.
Ben Reid carried the puck down the left wing and sent a backhand shot on goal. The rebound bounced in front to Wilson, who slid a shot along the ice that went off the right post and in, past goaltender Alexis Gravel. It was Wilson’s first QMJHL goal. Reid also earned his first career point with an assist.
Saint John took the lead with eight minutes left in the period thanks to their two returning imports.
Salda fed a pass from his own line to the centre-ice faceoff dot for Safin. The Edmonton Oilers’ prospect split the Halifax defence and slipped a backhander inside the right post on Gravel.
Boucher made it a 3-1 game with just over three minutes left in the frame.
A shot from the left point by Alexis Girard created a rebound and scramble near the Mooseheads’ crease. Boucher was able to chop the puck under Gravel.
Blade Mann-Dixon relieved Gravel following the third Saint John goal.
Halifax cut its deficit to one early in the second when Groulx potted the rebound of a Maxime Fortier shot from the slot.
McIsaac evened the score at 3-3 with a power play goal, a heavy wrist shot from the middle of the point that beat a screened D’Orio over his glove with two minutes left in the period.
The Moose grabbed the lead again two minutes into the third when Crossley took a shot from the left boards that deflected off defenceman Bailey Webster’s stick and through D’Orio’s legs.
Salda replied 48 seconds later.
A battle in the left wing corner saw the puck bounce into the high slot. Salda stepped into a slap shot and hammered it past Mann-Dixon’s glove to make it 4-4.
Lavoie ended the game nearly two minutes into overtime after a Saint John chance was denied.
Safin raced in on the right wing and rifled a wrister that was gloved by Mann-Dixon. The goaltender dropped the puck and quickly played it to defenceman Jocktan Chainey, who found Lavoie charging down the right side. The second-year centre cut in front of the goal and tucked the puck inside the right post to end the game.
Mann-Dixon made 25 saves and picked up an assist on the winning goal. He was named third star. Gravel allowed three goals on 11 shots in the first period. D’Orio made 34 stops in the loss.
Salda earned first star with a goal and an assist. Crossley’s two goals made him second star in front of 4,685 fans in attendance.
