The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles topped the Saint John Sea Dogs 6-2 on Wednesday night at Centre 200 in Sydney, NS. Saint John is now 2-21-2-1, Cape Breton improves to 14-11-1-1.
Cape Breton struck early and struck often with three quick goals to open the game. Shaun Miller opened the scoring at 1:40, followed by Gabriel Proulx at 4:32. Saint John took to the power play at 7:20 when Declan Smith was called for holding but were held off the score sheet. Former Sea Dog Ian Smallwood added the third Eagles goal at 12:25. Saint John led Cape Breton in shots on goal in the period, 12-11.
The Screaming Eagles picked up where they left off in the first hemming the Sea Dogs in their own zone and peppering Alex D’Orio with shots. Cape Breton made it 4-0 at 11:08 on a goal from Adam McCormick. The Sea Dogs responded on the power play when Charlie DesRoches ripped a blast from the slot beating William Grimard to put Saint John on the board at 17:07, DesRoches’ fourth goal of the year – good enough for third among rookie defencemen in the Q. Cape Breton out shot Saint John 15-5 in the period.
Both teams started the third short a man after William Villeneuve and Ryan Francis received 10 minute unsportsmanlike conduct misconducts and two minute penalties after they exchanged pleasantries while exiting the bench at the end of the second period. At 1:27 Brady Burns gained the zone with speed and fed a streaking Anthony Boucher who tucked it in to bring the Sea Dogs within two. The goal was the Sea Dogs captain’s fifth of the season, Burns’ 10th point on the assist. Five minutes later Olivier Bourret extended the Screaming Eagles lead back to three. Mikhail Denisov took over goaltender duties at 11:01 after former Sea Dog Isiah Campbell scored his fifth of the season to make it 6-2. Shots on goal in the period favored Cape Breton 16-5.
Alex D’Orio and Mikhail Denisov combined for 36 saves for Saint John, William Grimard turned aside 20 for the Screaming Eagles win.
