Riley Bezeau had his first Q goal in a 5-4 back-and-forth shootout loss on Saturday night in Halifax. Saint John tied the game three separate times but the Mooseheads held on to capture the extra point.
Creed Jones started in goal for Saint John while Cole McLaren had his second start in as many nights for the Mooseheads. The Herd were shutout by the Islanders 5-0 at home on Friday night.
It was a slow start for Saint John who hadn’t played a game since last Friday night at TD Station. The Mooseheads took a 2-0 lead 13 minutes into the first period on goals from Markus Vidicek and Zachary L’Heureux. Saint John was held to just six shots in the period but were finally able to get on the scoreboard with seven seconds remaining in the first when Riley Bezeau scored his first goal in the QMJHL.
Saint John came out firing in the second period and Josh Lawrence tied the game just 90 seconds in. The Mooseheads responded less than two minutes later on a solo effort from Elliot Desnoyers. Halifax would take a 3-2 lead into the intermission but Saint John dominated the shots in the frame, 17-6.
Six minutes into the third period Alex Drover scored his second of the season as he came barreling down the right side and fired a laser past Cole McLaren tying the game at 3-3. The tie stood for most of the period until Markus Vidicek scored his second of the game on a tip in front of Creed Jones. The goal was under review for quite some time for a possible high stick but was eventually ruled a good goal. With 90 seconds to play in the game and Jones on his way to the bench for the extra attacker, Charlie DesRoches ripped a blast from the blueline and Joshua Roy was in front of the net to knock it in to tie the game.
Both teams were held scoreless in overtime and the Sea Dogs headed to the shootout for their second game in a row. Alex Drover scored for Saint John on a nice deke in close but the Mooseheads responded with two goals of their own to take the win, 5-4 the final.
Josh Lawrence was awarded second star for his efforts in the game. He finished +2 with a goal and was 19/25 on face-offs. Charlie DesRoches and Dawson Stairs each had two assists.
