Cajkovic Nets Pair in Loss to Huskies

The Saint John Sea Dogs (8-12-1-0) ended their Quebec road trip with their fifth game in seven days, facing off against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (10-8-2-1) on Friday night.  Maxim Cajkovic increased his point streak to five games, scoring two goals against the reigning Memorial Cup Champions.

Zachary Bouthillier and Zachary Emond got the starts in net and lead their teams onto the ice.  Bouthillier made 34 saves in the 6-3 loss.

The Huskies opened up the scoring when Louis-Filip Côté sent a pass from behind the Sea Dogs net to the slot where William Rouleau was waiting 56 seconds into the first period.

Thomas Belzile took a low shot from the blue line, the bouncing puck went past Zachary Bouthillier and their lead increased to two at 5:40.

Maxim Cajkovic scored his fourth goal in as many games and cut the lead to one with a sharp angle shot from the faceoff circle at 9:29.

Cajkovic was sent to the box for tripping at 17:29.

Shots at the end of the first were 14-10 for the Huskies.

The Dogs dominated the play to start the second period, including a goal at 3:11 by Matt Gould.  Gould capitalized on a defensive zone turnover in front of the Huskies net and slammed the puck to the back of the net, tying the game at two.

The momentum began to shift near the end of the period. After a flurry of action in front of Bouthillier, in which he made several great saves and lost his stick, Rouyn-Noranda took the lead with a goal from Adrian Valigura at 15:36.

The Sea Dogs penalty kill was successful for the second time of the night after a high sticking penalty to Dawson Stairs at 16:39.

Cajkovic got a breakaway attempt in the dying seconds of the period, but he hit the post with two seconds remaining.

Shots going into the third period were 24-23 for Saint John.

Rouyn-Noranda controlled the play in the third period. Scoring at 2:37 on a wrist shot from Alex Gritz and again at 7:04 on a screened shot from Alex Beaucage, the Huskies maintained their lead for the rest of the game.

The Saint John power play was able to come out twice due to a roughing penalty to Alexis Aresenault at 11:30 and a bench minor for too many players on the ice served by Jack Tucker at 13:41, but both times the penalties were killed by the Huskies.

Cajkovic scored his second of the game at 16:31, coming in with speed, sending the puck past Zachary Emond at a sharp angle, and bringing Saint John back within two.

Bouthillier was pulled and the Dogs created some offense with the extra man, but it was cut short when Tyler Hinam scored an empty net goal from the far blue line at 18:56.

Shots at the end of the game were 40-37 for Rouyn-Noranda.
