The Saint John Sea Dogs (0-2-0-0) fell to their rivals 5-2 in the rematch at the Charlottetown Islanders (2-0-0-0) from last night’s game. The Sea Dogs went down 3-0 after the first, Peter Reynolds scored his first of the season in the second quickly followed by Brady Burns on a power play.
Seas Dogs started with Jonathan Lemieux in net with a 0.895 save percentage, stopping 29 of the 34 shots he faced.
The Sea Dogs started off with the first power play of the game, with Lukas Cormier heading to the penalty box on an interference call. The Dogs were not able to capitalize on the man advantage. After 9 minutes of play, Islander Sam Oliver jumped on a loose puck giving Islanders the first lead of the game 1-0. Patrick Guay quickly struck again giving the Islanders a 2-0 lead.
With 1:19 left in the period Olivier Picard was sent to the penalty box for a minor holding penalty. Islanders forward Brett Budgell capitalized on the one man advantage scoring a late goal at the end of the period sending the Sea Dogs to the dressing room down 3-0.
Shots at the end of the period were 9-9.
At 2:17 into the second period, Cam MacDonald was ejected from the game and received a 5 minute major penalty for checking to the head.
With Charlie DesRoches sitting in the penalty box and the Dogs on a PK, Peter Reynolds scored his first goal of the season, and the first short handed goal in the QMJHL for the 2021-2022 season at 11:37. Then, with only 3 minutes left in the period and the Sea Dogs on the power play, Brady Burns had a great shot through the traffic in front of the net scoring his second goal of the season making it a one goal game. The intensity continued to build and the period ended with a fight between Riley Bezeau and Mathis Aguilar.
Shots at the end of the period were 14-12 for the Charlottetown Islanders.
24 seconds into the period Islanders’ Brett Budgell scored making it a 4-2 game. Despite a hard fight back from the Sea Dogs, Xavier Simoneau sealed the deal for the game with an empty net goal, making it a 5-2 loss for the Sea Dogs.
Final Shots of the game were 34-25 for the Charlottetown Islanders.
