SUBWAY GAME RECAP: Sea Dogs Lose in OT to Titan

Ty Higgins capped off a four-point night with a hat trick, overtime winner to give the Acadie-Bathurst Titan (19-36-5-3) a 4-3 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs (22-36-4-1) on Sunday afternoon.

Robert Orr also had a solid effort with a pair of assists in the win while Joshua Fleming made 30 saves in net.

Brady Burns and Alex Drover led the Sea dogs with a goal and an assist each while Ventsislav Shingarov made 29 saves.

The Titan got the first chance eight minutes in as Jonah Leard collected the puck behind the Sea Dogs net and found Emile Perron in the slot for a slapshot that Shingarov challenged well and made the save.

A minute and a half later Ben Allison kept the puck and cut to the net off a 2-on-1 but his shot just missed the open section of the net and went wide.

Two minutes after that Allison put a pass from behind the net to Higgins just below the faceoff dot for a quick shot that Shingarov again had to be sharp to stop.

Shots after the first were 8-5 for the Titan.

A minute and a half into the second Burns stole the puck at the Titan blue line for a chance in alone but Fleming stayed with him and made a great right pad save on the goal line to just keep it out.

The Titan finally put the game’s first goal on the board as Higgins fired a shot from the point past a screened Shingarov to make it 1-0 five minutes into the second.

The Sea Dogs responded 88 seconds later as the Titan turned the puck over at their own blue line again and it ended up on Burn’s stick once more who made no mistake snapping a shot past Fleming to tie it up 1-1.

With just over five minutes left in the frame, Higgins hit Donovan Arsenault with a stretch pass for a breakaway where Arsenault put a nice move and a backhander past Shingarov to make it 2-1 Titan.

Peter Reynolds nearly tied the game once more with two minutes left in the second, one-timing a cross-crease pass only for Fleming to get across in just enough time to keep it out.

Reynolds and Burns then came down on a 2-on-1 with 30 seconds left, worked a give and go for a shot from Burns only to be robbed by Fleming once more. Holding the Titan lead into the third period.

Shots after the second were 24-16 for the Sea Dogs.

1:15 into the third Eriks Mateiko entered the Titan zone, stopped up to feed Joseph Ianniello at the point who quickly fed the puck back down low to Drover who one-timed the puck past Fleming to tie the game 2-2.

Five minutes later the Sea Dogs took the lead as Reynolds worked the puck to Jared Cosman at the point who fed Burns down low and Burns put a cross-ice pass to Reynolds, now at the back door of the Titan net, who buried it to make it 3-2.

Acadie-Bathurst answered back late in the period on the power play as Higgins put another well-placed shot through traffic for his second of the game to tie the game 3-3 with 2:44 left in regulation.

The tie lasted the final minutes of the period and the game headed to overtime.

Shots after the third period were 32-30 for the Sea Dogs.

With 32 seconds left in overtime, Higgins skated the puck up ice, and laid it off to Dominik Godin as he entered the Sea Dogs zone who took a shot that Shingarov stopped but Higgins was all over the rebound to put home his hat trick goal and the overtime winner to give the Titan the 4-3 victory.

Final shots were an even 33-33.
