The Canadian Hockey League announced this morning that the Saint John Sea Dogs will be the hosts of the 2022 Memorial Cup presented by Kia.
“Saint John is a special place and we’re excited to share it with the rest of the world,” said Trevor Georgie, the Sea Dogs’ President & General Manager. “After the disappointment of being eliminated from the 2017 Memorial Cup, we immediately turned our attention to building a contender for the 2022 Memorial Cup.”
A trophy with a long and storied history, the Memorial Cup was awarded for the first time in 1919 in remembrance of the many soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice for Canada in The First World War. The Sea Dogs have participated in three Memorial Cups over 16 seasons in the QMJHL, including 2011 in Mississauga, when they became the first ever Maritime team to win the Memorial Cup.
“Our organization’s heart and soul has gone into realizing the opportunity to hoist the Memorial Cup in our home city,” said Georgie. “We are ecstatic that our fans will get to experience this once-in-a-lifetime event. This is one of the most significant days in Sea Dogs’ history.”
After two years without the tournament due to COVID, the Sea Dogs are proud to be able to give the Memorial Cup a warm welcome back in the port city.
“I’m proud to be a New Brunswicker and hosting the Memorial Cup in my home province has been a longtime dream,” said Scott McCain, Owner & Chief Executive Officer of the Sea Dogs. “I have experienced what a great impact the Memorial Cup can have on a community. Hockey is a wonderful sport and I couldn’t be more excited about this world-class event happening right here in Saint John.”
The round robin tournament will take place from June 3 – 12, 2022, when the Sea Dogs will compete with the champions of the Ontario Hockey League, the Western Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, to determine the best of the best of the CHL.
“This is a phenomenal day for our community,” said the Chair of the Saint John Bid Committee, Mark-Anthony Ashfield. “Our approach to this bid and our theme of “One for All“ focused on what the Memorial Cup will mean for our community and the lasting, positive impact it will leave. I am thrilled for our region and can’t wait for everyone to experience the Memorial Cup in our home town.”
