It was an emotional night Thursday at Harbour Station as the Sea Dogs paid tribute to long time Sea Dogs Equipment Manager David “DK” Kelly who passed away late Wednesday night. In a pre-game ceremony the Sea Dogs and visiting Titan joined each other to form a circle around center ice as the crowd observed a four minute moment of silence in recognition of the four championships David was a part of during his time with the Sea Dogs.
With Saint John (12-46-2-3) missing some key veterans due to injuries it was the Acadie-Bathurst Titan coming away with the victory in this the first game of a back-to-back home stand for the Sea Dogs, 3-1.
The Sea Dogs had two power play opportunities to open the game after William Champagne went off for tripping at 1:53 and Mathieu Samson served a too many players minor at 4:07, but couldn’t convert on either.
At 11:44 it was the Titan getting on the board first when Liam Léonard scored to take a 1-0 lead.
As the first period closed Maxim Cajkovic was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct and would serve the first 10 minutes of the second period in the penalty box.
After James White laid a thunderous hit, Liam Leonard took offence and the two dropped the gloves for a spirited affair at 11:47 of the second.
Cole Rafuse made it 2-0 Acadie-Bathurst with just over 30 seconds left in the second period. The Titan out shot the Sea Dogs 23-10 in the second period.
The third period was a frustrating one for Saint John as they just couldn’t solve Grametbauer. Bouthillier was pulled down the stretch and the Titan would add an empty netter at 18:37 with Leonard getting his second of the game.
With 44 seconds to go in the game Jérémie Jacob broke the shutout when he found himself on a breakaway and slipped the puck through Grametbauer’s five-hole to make it 3-1.
Zachary Bouthillier stopped 41 for Saint John while Grametbauer made 29 saves for the win.
