VELENO’S VOLTS DOWN DOGS IN DENISOV’S DEBUT

Netminder Mikhail Denisov was brilliant in his Sea Dogs debut but Joe Veleno and the Drummondville Voltigeurs were too much on Friday night at Harbour Station.

Play was even in the first period with both teams exchanging chances. Drummondville struck first on a goal from Cedric Desruisseaux at 14:40. Saint John evened things up at 16:44 when Nathan Larose snapped a low shot from the right hash marks past Daniel Moody. Rookie Dawson Stairs added an assist on the goal, his first point as a Sea Dog and in the QMJHL. Mikhail Denisov was solid in net. Shots on goal in the period favored the Voltigeurs 11-9.

The second period was all Drummondville as they pounded the Sea Dogs with 26 shots. Goals came from Cedric Desruisseaux, and Xavier Simoneau adding a pair of power play markers. Brady Burns added his own power play goal hammering home a one timer feed from Jeremie Poirier at 12:03 to make it 5-2 heading into the third. Denisov kept the Sea Dogs in the game making several highlight reel saves. Shots on goal were 26-7 Drummondville in the period.

The third period was Joe Veleno’s time to shine. The former Sea Dog Captain added two goals in the period, his 12th and 13th of the season. Dawson Mercer¬†notched a short handed goal at 14:00 making it 7-2 Drummondville. Shots on goal in the third were 10-9 Volts.

Mikhail Denisov had 40 saves in the loss, while Daniel Moody picked up the win with 23 stops.
